VENUS VON WILLENDORF

Why were the exaggerated features evident in the Venus Von Willendorf so desirable to the Paleolithic tribes?
The artist has exaggerated the features of the Venus Von Willendorf as a means of emphasising the feminine beauty and sensuality within the form. The enlarged chest and waist create the idea that the woman is pregnant, this forces the idea that motherhood was huge focus in the Paleolithic tribes. The face and arms are almost completely unrecognisable in the sculpture, this shows the figure without an identity and the ability to force change. By viewing the Venus Von Willendorf, the conclusion can be drawn that the figure was created to draw focus to the female form with specific attention to the imperfections of the body. In todays society, this figure would be viewed as unappealing, however, the intensity of feminine features within the work expose the form and its reality to the Paleolithic tribes recognising it as desirable.
Explain how this artwork provides insight into the time and place in which it was created.
The materials used to create this sculpture provide an understanding of what was available as a resource for artist in Ancient Egypt. The body image portrayed in the Venus of Willendorf shows how woman were depicted at that time.
