Neoclassicism
The French Academy of Painting and Sculpture believed that painters should abide by certain rules.
- Works should tell spiritual and moral uplifting stories
- Paintings should be based on Classical mythology and have some form of moral message
- Works must praise government and their leaders
- Tonal drawing, with glazed washes of oil colour built up with care
Discuss the purpose of these rules and the effect they had on the artists and society at the time.
These rules confined artists to a specific set of guidelines and left minimal room for creativity and individuality in their own work. Artist's who were not accepted into the Academy found it very difficult to make it in the art world. These restricting rules caused a social upheaval within society that challenged the conformity and social norms.

JACQUES-LOUIS DAVID
Explain the impact the Academy and/ or Classicism had on his or her artmaking practice. Refer to at least TWO artworks to support your arguments.
Jacques-Louis David, inspired by his passion for creativity and artwork was heavily influenced by The French Academy of Painting and Sculpture in his artmaking procedures. Both 'The Anger of Achilles' and 'Oath of Horatii' were slowly created through the manipulation of oil paints which were heavily used in the Academy. In these artworks there is a mood of authority to the subject matter which has been expressed through the symbolism of red and stance. The emotions of the artworks are carried through the body language and the facial expressions of the figures. This technique has been carried through from the Classical mythology art movement and embraces it with a connection to the modern era of its time.
